Visual Outputs for Inclusive Change and Environments conducts multidisciplinary research which main goal is mapping for social justice. This research explores how architecture and urban design can be powerful tools for promoting social justice. We examine the impact of user-generated digital content, such as videos and images, and social media coverage of protests in the built environment to raise cultural awareness and understanding of human rights.

about us.

This research aims to answer whether a spatial approach to documenting and visualizing specific events and protests can benefit lawyers, artists, and social activists in their fact-finding and analysis efforts.

News outlets failed to mention the specific dorms in which students sought refuge in during protests. Dorms affiliated with the university were documented to further investigate police attacks on the students. The drawing highlights the parking lot and the flow of how students fled the paintball attacks from officers. While gathering information from different news outlets, especially reliable ones, a lack of specificity of media coverage for important events was observed. The drawing documents the first hand experiences of the students based on the user-generated content that they published, as well as serves as a critique and analysis of how Western journalists document foreign events.

VOICE envisions a world where the built environment can offer individuals safe spaces to express their point of views collectively which promotes democratic society, regardless of their gender, ethnicity, religion or expression. By focusing its efforts on refugees, survivors of oppression and gender apartheid, VOICE aims to alleviate critical global humanitarian crises impacting women, democratic governance, justice, environmental and human rights.

CODEC, A collaborative tool for managing video evidence.

designed by situ,

USED BY VOICE.

This research focuses on user-generated content and authentically documented experiences. We investigated and researched protestor experiences, and represented them through architectural diagrams. The CODEC is a video evidence and organizational tool for events and timeline, aiding our research in connecting the Women Life Freedom movement in Tehran, Iran and war crimes in Bucha, Ukraine to the site context and surroundings. As current or aspiring architects, we use the information gathered from published activists and protestors to represent their evidence through different focuses.
